Our new hybrid red milo has become a great late fall food source for hunters all over the country. This works great where it is impossible to grow corn. When our milo is growing, the deer, bear, raccoons and other wildlife leave it alone. This is a red milo and it is very bitter to deer until fall. This is a great alternative to corn. The milo provides a great source of carbohydrates when cold weather sets in.
This is NOT round up ready.
We use Dual II magnum as a preemergent and 2-4d after germination for broadleaf control if milo is planted alone. Atrazine or Simazine can be used before planting if only milo is planted and no other seeds are added at planting.
Do not use 2-4d if you have added sugar beets, rutabaga, beans or peas.
You can only use Dual II Magnum for pre emergent if you add beans/beets/ peas/rutabaga.
Planting rate is about 5-6 pounds per acre broadcast. 4-5 drilled on 15 inch row centers.
16,000 seeds per pound and looking for 50 to 60,000 per acre for healthy plants.
If you going to add sugar beets, beans or peas to the planting, use only Dual II magnum as a preemergent spray.
Seed must be buried at least 1/2 inch
19-19-19 and 46-0-0 for fertilizer ( general recommendations without seeing a soil test)

First time trying the red Milo . Will definitely plant again ! As of July 21 it’s looking great!! I have relatively poor soil but you wouldn’t know it with this product , grows great!!

We planted the red Milo in narrow strips next to soybeans. Came up beautiful. Planted in early June. I also planted some Milo in with soybeans in another location.

Germination has been fantastic at the recommended seeding rate. If you are broadcasting take your time and make many passes. I got impatient and distribution was patchy in some spots. I also used the till in method (w/ rototiller) and depth is very important. Think fluff the top inch prior to packing, deeper is not better. I planted several test areas w/no herbicide post planting into tilled rye plot; sod to plot conversion, next to field grass, next to clover plots, w and wo/pumpkins, w and wo/ winter peas. Base mix per acre was 100lbs soybeans, 6lb milo, 2lb sugar beets, 4lb red clover, 2 lb chicory, 200 urea, 200lb 19-19-19. At this point given how things have came up with extreme dear density (all beans have been nipped, but are recovering) the mix I would recommend is 100lb soybeans, 6lb milo, 2lb sugar beets, 100 lb peas, .5 lb pumpkins, and pre/post herbicide. The areas w/peas and pumpkin have the lowest weed pressure, best consistency, and have been the fastest growing in all instances. Time will tell this fall about the chicory and clover, but I plan to overseed 100 lb of rye in August/September.

It has taken my farm to the next level. I have approximately 6 acres of Milo in total transforming a large pasture field to a jungle of food with green fields stamped through.

My Deer herd will eat these Milo heads when it’s in the dough stage in August, then it will grow out 2 or 3 smaller heads for the second attempt at reproducing. This gives the deer some additional late fall/winter food here in Oklahoma.
Northwoods Red Milo was amazing. Deer left it alone till seedstalks got ripe and then they hammered it. It provided a screening effect for my food plots as I planted as a boundary around my plots. I bought more. Highly recommend! Thanks John!
I planted 2 small plots and the plants grew great, but the deer didn't touch them as of Jan.6th. I have tracks and pictures of deer walking through the milo. The deer are digging in the snow to get at the clover and other plants in the food plot. I didn't plant anything with the milo. I would give the plant a 5 star for growth and 1 star for deer use.

Yes I planted this product,and the deer are crushing it .I will only be planting 3 things no more experiments ,red milo ,lidino clover ,chickory,that is it.

The red Milo is coming up pretty well, it started slow due to over 3 inches of rain right after planting, but is coming on now. Looking forward to seeing it in a few weeks!
The red Milo is coming up nicely in my sandy soil food plot. If it keeps going the way I think it will, it will produce a nice crop.
